NEW DELHI: The 13th Vice-Presidential poll will be held on August 10 and the votes counted the same day, the Election Commission announced on Thursday. The term of Bhairon Singh Shekhawat ends on August 18.
The election will be notified on July 9 and the last date for filing of nominations is July 23. They will be scrutinised the following day and withdrawals can be made till July 26. Should there be a contest, polling will take place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. on August 10.
Members of Parliament, including those nominated, constitute the electoral college. As in the Presidential election, the Vice-President is elected under a system of proportional representation by means of a single transferable vote.
The Rajya Sabha Secretary-General will be the returning officer. Assistant returning officers from among the officers of the Rajya Sabha Secretariat will assist the returning officer.
Nomination papers with a security deposit of Rs. 15,000 can be submitted by a candidate or his/her proposers or seconders between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Each nomination has to be subscribed to by at least 20 electors as proposers and an equal number as seconders. An elector can put his/her signature on only one nomination paper either as a proposer or seconder.
