Bhuvana continues her giant-killing act

CHENNAI: Qualifier K. Bhuvana of Andhra Pradesh continued her giant-killing act with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the top-seed Preethi Srinivasan (Tamil Nadu) in the girls’ under 16 semifinals of the UC MAS AITA (Talent Series) tennis tournament at Singaram Pillai MHSS here on Thursday.

Shreya Ravichandran of Tamil Nadu upset the No.1 seed and State-mate C. Sai Samitha 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 in the girls’ under-14 quarterfinals. Shreya later defeated Dhruthi T Venugopal of Karnataka, the third seed, 6-2, 6-0 to enter the final.

CM’s award instituted

The Government of Tamil Nadu has instituted the Chief Minister’s Award for two coaches and two physical directors/ physical education teachers for the year 2007-08 (one for male PD/ PET and one for female PD/PET) with proven excellence in having produced excellent sportspersons.

Each individual will be entitled for Rs.1,00,000 and a citation. Applications are invited from coaches (SDAT/ SAI and others) and PETs/ PDs of all schools with proven record, who are domiciled in Tamil Nadu for the last five years and have produced National/ international level sportspersons.

Application forms along with the guidelines for the Chief Minister’s Award for best coaches/ PETs/ PDs can be downloaded from www.sportsinfoto.com.

Entries close on November 1 with the Member-Secretary, SDAT, 116-A, Periyar EVR High Road, Nehru Park, Chennai.

VASPO from July 9

Fortytwo colleges from across South India will take part in VASPO 2007, the national level-inter-collegiate sporting event, which will be hosted by MOP Vaishnav College for Women from July 9 to 11.

The colleges will compete for the Dr. Sivanthi Adityan Overall Rolling Trophy in basketball, volleyball and table tennis.

“We are expecting around 500 participants from states like Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka, besides Tamil Nadu,” said Dr. K. Nirmala Prasad, Principal, MOP Vaishnav, at a press meet.

There will be 18 teams taking part in basketball, and 16 in volleyball.

Nine teams will participate in table tennis. For the first time, the event will see engineering colleges in the fray.

St. Joseph’s scripts win

St. Joseph’s overcame Sivanthi Club 25-20, 26-24, 25-21 in the women’s section of the IOB-SRM Chennai District ‘A’ division volleyball league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Thursday.

V. Vinay’s five-wicket haul helped PSBB K.K. Nagar defeat Hindu SSS by six runs in the St. Bede’s Sumeru Soft Under-15 Centenary cricket tournament here on Thursday.

St. Bede’s 204 for seven in 30 overs (K. Bharat Shankar 71, Leonard Bruno 41, S. Jitender 25) bt St.Patricks 132 for six in 30 overs (A.R Srihari Prasad Rao 34, U. Sasidev 57).

PSBB (T. Nagar) 87 in 28.5 overs (S.R. Vibhu three for 15) Lost to St. John’s ES & JC 88 for two in 14.2 overs (S.R. Vibhu 42 n.o.).

PSBB (K.K. Nagar) 152 in 29.4 overs (R. Bharat 27, A Naufal Ahmed three for 28) bt Hindu SSS 146 in 28.2 overs (A. Nuafal Ahmed 44, S. Balaji 49, V. Vinay five for ten).

Rajagopal’s spell in vain

R. Rajagopal’s spell of five for 15 went in vain as Thiruvarur lost to Krishnagiri by three runs in the TNCA under-19 first round matches on Thursday.

The scores: Krishnagiri 100 in 36.2 overs (R. Rajagopal five for 15) bt Thiruvarur 97 in 25.4 overs. Tiruvallur 264 in 49.4 overs (Karthik Adithya 52, T.S. Santhosh Kumar 46) bt Virudhunagar 94 in 25.1 overs (N. Arun four for nine). Schools cricket

The G. Rajkumar National-level CBSE schools invitation cricket tournament (u-15) will commence on July 12 at the Marina Cricket Ground. All the matches will be played on a 30-over-a-side basis.

State-level hockey

The Winning XI Women’s Hockey Club will conduct the annual D.S. Rajamanickam and Md. Ghouse memorial State-level tournament at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium from August 7 to 12. Junior tennis

The qualifying rounds will be played from July 7; signing-in will be on July 6 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
