Notices to three city colleges

Staff Reporter

For not admitting students from State list

Notices to Lourde Matha, Marian and Mar Baselios

Colleges had given written assurance to the University

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The University of Kerala has issued show cause notices to the Lourde Matha College of Science and Technology, Kuttichal, Marian College of Engineering, Menamkulam and to the Mar Baselios College of Science and Technology, Nalanchira asking them to give reasons why their temporary affiliation should not be cancelled.

A press note issued here said the notices were issued because these institutions did not admit students from the Government rank list to 50 per cent of seats. While applying for university affiliation these institutions had given a written assurance that they would admit students on the basis of merit from the rank list of the Commissioner for Entrance Examination to 50 per cent of seats. The agreement that these institutions entered into with the university also allows that their affiliation can be cancelled if they do not comply with this condition.

While the Lourde Matha College had given this assurance on March 25, 2003, the Mar baselios College had given the assurance on March 24, 2003 and the Marian College on April 24, 2003. The institutions have been given 10 days to reply to the show cause notices.

The University has also given notice to the Mar Baselios College and to the Marian college to rectify some deficiencies noticed by the university varsity, the press note added.

College clarifies

The P. A. Aziz College of Engineering and Technology, Karakulam has, in a press note issued here said that all courses offered by it have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education. It is unfortunate that the University of Kerala, in a press note issued here recently, included the College in the list of institutions where deficiencies in academic infrastructure and other irregularities were noticed.

The order of the AICTE allowing 60 seats for civil engineering during the previous academic year was wrongly addressed to the secretary, higher education of Karnataka. This was a minor problem that was subsequently corrected by the AICTE itself, the college management has said.
