Kunhalikutty warns against reforms

Staff Reporter

MALAPPURAM: Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State treasurer P.K. Kunhalikutty has warned the Government of serious consequences if it does not withdraw its move to introduce educational reforms.

Inaugurating a march taken out by Kerala School Teachers Union (KSTU) to the District Collectorate here on Friday, Mr. Kunhalikutty said the Government should hold a public debate prior to introducing reforms in crucial sectors such as education.

He said unilateral reforms in education imposed upon a community would not be tolerated. Mr. Kunhalikutty accused the Communist Party of India (Marxist) of trying to torpedo the success of Malappuram district in education.

He said the Government should correct its stand on Vijayabheri, the education project implemented by the district panchayat. The Government had recently cancelled the deputation of Vijayabheri coordinators, sparking a spate of protests by teachers’ organisations affiliated to the United Democratic Front.

C.K. Ahamed Kutty, president of the KSTU, presided. Muslim Youth League president K.M. Shaji and KSTU State president C.P. Cheriyamohammed were among those who spoke. Abdulla Vavoor, KSTU general secretary, welcomed the gathering.
