dated July 7, 1957 : Hoad retains title

L.A. Hoad of Australia on July 5 achieved the distinction of being the first player after World War II to win the men’s singles title twice in the Wimbledon lawn tennis championship beating his compatriot. A.J. Cooper, 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Hoad is the first holder to retain the title since the American, Budge, did so 19 years ago. The first Australian to achieve the “double” in successive years in Wimbledon’s 80-year history, Hoad (22) reached full maturity with one of the finest displays of power tennis he has ever given.
