PUDUCHERRY: It was a function got together by the Pondicherry Reader’s Circle to remember Kavingar Kannadasan, and introduce his works to Gen-next readers. “My father respected his work very much, so much so that he wouldn’t wear his slippers when he composed a song, even though the poems were meant for films. Though he had penned hundreds of songs for films towards the end of his life he died penniless,” recalled Gandhi Kannadasan, the poet’s son. MLA K Lakshminarayanan recalled how as students they had invited Kannadasan and Music director M.S. Viswanathan to a demonstration at Loyola College and asked them to write a song on the spot and compose the music for it. “Our Tamil professor gave a situation about a young girl who had lost a limb and he composed a song ‘Oru Kaal Unnai Maraveno’ very spontaneously.” Senior Superintendent of Police B. Srikanth said that songs like ‘Unnai arindhaal…’ and ‘Vaazha ninaithaal vaazhalaam…’ inspired the masses. “At a time when film songs were very complicated and had Sanskritised words, Kannadasan’s songs were easily understood by the public. His songs were soul stirring.” he added. Reader’s Circle secretary M. Sampathkumar said that 10 volumes of Kannadasan’s ‘Arthamulla Hindu Madham’ were given at a discounted rate to readers that day.Reader’s Circle president Sundara Lakshminarayanan was present on the occasion.
