Municipality, Rotary Clubs come together for development of Vellore

VELLORE: The Vellore Municipality will join hands with the Rotary Clubs here to undertake development works for the welfare of the people of Vellore, municipal chairman P. Karthikeyan has said.

Participating in a function to install the new office bearers of the Rotary Club of Vellore South here on Thursday, Mr. Karthikeyan hailed Rotary District 3230 for having taken up ‘Project Selvi’. ‘Project Selvi’is aimed at implementing schemes for the welfare of women this year.

C.S. Ramachandran, former Rotary District Governor, presented the Rotary pin to Mr. Karthikeyan.

He said that thirty crore children had been immunised against polio throughout India under Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign.

G. Olivannan, District Club Service Chairman (2007-08), said that the Polio Plus campaign had been implemented at a cost of Rs. 3,000 crore across the world.

Projects planned

S. Ravisekharan, who has been installed as the president of the Rotary Club of Vellore South for 2007-08, said that a committee had been constituted under the chairmanship of former President D. Samarasam for the implementation of ‘Project Selvi’.

The committee will select 15 women for vocational training.

The club will organise special medical camps and implement schemes for environmental protection this year.

It will plant one thousand trees on the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway in Vellore.

The club will also conduct leadership skill development programmes for the youth and contests for children to bring out their talents.

D. Viswanathan, President-elect, 2008-09, donated spectacle frames worth Rs. 2 lakh to the poor.

Mr. Samarasam and Mr. Ravisekharan donated Rs. 5,000 each for the marathon to be organised here by all the Rotary Clubs in Vellore. The marathon will take place on August 12.

AIDS, polio awareness

More than 10,000 students are expected to participate in the event, which is a Rotary District 3230 project aimed at creating awareness of AIDS and polio eradication.

Mr. Ravisekharan donated Rs. 5,000 on behalf of C.R.S. Auto Finance to the Rotary Club of Vellore South Trust in memory of his parents Suseelammal and Chockalingam.

V. Kumar was installed as Vice-President, K.M. Shammikumar as secretary, V. Thayumanavan as joint secretary and Thulasi Kamalanathan as treasurer of the Rotary Club of Vellore South for 2007-08.
