Municipal council gets Opposition leader

Puducherry: Puducherry Municipal chairperson B. Sridevi announced the appointment of Congress councillor V. Govindaraj (elected from Ilango Nagar ward) as Leader of the Opposition in the council at its 11th meeting here on Friday.

This came amidst protests from councillors that the Puducherry Municipalities, Village and Commune Panchayats Act 1973 stipulated only the posts of the chairperson and a vice-chairman.

No other post had been envisaged for the municipal council.

The three-hour-long meeting was marked by protests against the modalities adopted either in posting of workers or in the transfer of the officials. — Special Correspondent
