Recipient suffered recurrent heart failure Donor’s kidneys, liver sent to other hospitals
HYDERABAD: Doctors at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here successfully carried out a heart transplantation on a 28-year-old farmer, who has been facing recurrent heart failure. The procedure was carried out in the early hours of Friday after the heart was retrieved from a “brain dead” person. Apart from the heart, kidneys and liver of the donor, Nagi Reddy, who met with a road accident near Sangareddy in Medak district on Wednesday, were also retrieved and donated to different hospitals in the city. In all, four chronic patients received the organs of Nagi Reddy, on whom the elaborate procedures were taken up around two in the morning on Thursday, after confirming that he was clinically dead and there was no possibility of recovery. NIMS Director, D. Prasada Rao, and several other specialists who conducted a series of surgeries on Nagi Reddy for 12 hours, later told reporters that their efforts bore fruit only due to the willingness of the relatives of the donor. They said the heart recipient, Y. Gopi (28), a farmer of Rangampet mandal headquarters village in East Godavari district, had been visiting NIMS for the last three years due to a recurrent heart failure. He was admitted to the intensive care unit of NIMS several times but he showed no signs of improvement. Chance donor
As Gopi’s condition “worsened” despite high doses of medicines, he was advised to remain in Hyderabad and await a chance donor for heart transplant. Dr. Prasada Rao said the reason for the heart failure of Gopi was not known. He also said the heart of Nagi Reddy was kept on breathing machine after it was retrieved.
