Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has asked the Centre to adopt a more liberal stand in allowing financial assistance for monsoon havoc and other natural calamities. Inaugurating the State Land and Disaster Management Institute here on Friday, he said the rain havoc and sea erosion claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed property worth crores of rupees in the State every year. The impact of natural calamities could be reduced if advance information about them were available. The Disaster Management Institute could help overcome the lacuna in this regard by imparting training to people. The Chief Minister stated that the functioning of the State Disaster Management Authority would be extended to the district and rural levels. Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran, who presided over the function, said the Government would try to present a disaster management policy after consultations with experts in the present session of the Assembly itself. Modern facilities would be provided to the Fire and Rescue Service for use in disaster management activities. He disclosed that he had requested the National Disaster Management Authority to set up a unit of the special force created to tackle disasters in Kerala. Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran said the Disaster Management Authority should be able to avert disasters and respond promptly to situation instead of resorting to the conventional rescue operations after disasters. Vice-Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority Gen. N.C.Vij in his keynote address promised all support for the State Authority.
