‘Home Department went out of the way for protecting LiS’ ‘VS should examine the help given to lottery tycoon’
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Ramesh Chennithala has urged Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to take the necessary legal action on the Rs.1-crore bribery case involving an employee of the CPI (M) organ D esabhimani and its bonds issue linked to the lottery mafia. In a letter to the Chief Minister, Mr. Chennithala said an inquiry by T.P. Sen Kumar, Additional Director General of Police, had found that LiS had committed financial irregularities to the tune of Rs.600 crore. The details of the deal intended to help the company wriggle out of its legal tangle had come out now. Attempts were constantly made to frustrate the inquiry into the LiS dealings through frequent transfers of investigating officers. The Government had also failed to give sanction to a police request to register a case against the company as per the RBI Act. As a result, the company was now facing legal proceedings before the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate under minor provisions. Mr. Chennithala said the promoters of LiS had floated another company, Jyothis, purporting to do the same business that had been found to be irregular. Tracing the links in the case, he alleged that the Home Department had gone out of the way to give protection to the company. These facts had come out and had been discussed at the CPI(M) secretariat which included the Chief Minister and the Home Minister as members. It was unfortunate that no case had been registered against the former Desabhimani employee till date. The Home Minister had informed the Assembly that the Government would file a case, but his statement lacked clarity. Mr. Chennithala said people of Kerala were shocked by the news that lottery tycoon S. Martin had funded the Desabhimani to the tune of Rs.2 crore. He wanted the Chief Minister to examine the kind of assistance his Government had given to a lottery agent who was an accused in several court cases, including one before the Supreme Court.
