Floods in south Bengal

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: Twenty persons have died and nearly seven lakh people affected in floods and water-logging caused by heavy rains over the past four days across south Bengal.

Intermittent rains continued in most areas on Friday though the intensity of the showers in Kolkata had waned considerably. Life returned to normal here but some low-lying areas remained submerged. The Army was deployed and Air Force helicopters were used to rescue marooned villagers in Paschim Medinipur – one of the worst affected districts.

The Government has allocated Rs.12 crore for relief work.
