Edmonton: Host Canada is in danger of a first-round exit at the FIFA under-20 World Cup football tournament after a 1-0 loss to Austria on Thursday. Two losses from its opening two games leaves Canada having to beat Republic of Congo in Sunday’s final Group A game to have any chance of making it into the second round. In other games on Thursday, Mexico beat Portugal 2-1, Gambia downed New Zealand 1-0 and Chile outclassed the Congo 3-0. In order to reach the second round, Canada must now beat the Congo and hope to qualify as one of the four best-performed third-placed teams from the six groups. After a dour first half the action picked up in the second after Austria took the lead when Ruben Okotie headed a corner past Canadian goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in the 47th minute. Antunes replied with a 22-yard free kick in the 89th minute for Portugal, but could not create another chance. The results: Under-20 World Cup: Canada 0 lost to Austria 1 (Okotie); Chile 3 (Sanchez, Medina, Vidal) bt Congo 0; Gambia 1 (Jallow) bt New Zealand 0; Mexico 2 (Dos Santos, Barrera) bt Portugal 1 (Antunes). — AP
