IOC leaders love London’s contentious logo

GUATEMALA CITY: IOC leaders love the London logo.

The jigsaw-style logo — which has been widely ridiculed in Britain — made its debut before the full International Olympic Committee on Thursday in a presentation by London organizing chief Sebastian Coe.

“I just want to highlight the fact that a month ago you showed me the logo,” IOC president Jacques Rogge told Coe. “I loved it. I approved it and I am now very proud to wear it.”

Rogge was wearing a pin of the logo on his lapel, as was Coe.

Denis Oswald, the head of the IOC coordination commission for the London Games, called the design “fantastic, creative, dynamic, young, flexible.”

The logo, comprised of four jagged pieces which form the numbers 2012, was unveiled in London a month ago. It attracted a chorus of criticism, and within hours, an online petition was established asking for a new design.

“We knew our brand would be challenged,” Coe told the delegates. “We knew it would spark debate.”

“I bet you can’t wait for our mascot,” he said. Oswald said the IOC was completely satisfied with the pace of preparations in London. “We have no particular concerns,” he said. “The British media are the most difficult in the world. It will be a challenge for the organizing committee to meet the communications test.” — AP
