Probe on into hacking of Ravenshaw University website

Correspondent

Obscene pictures, write-ups appear for two consecutive days on the site

CUTTACK: After registering a case on Friday, the cyber police station of the State crime branch has begun investigation into a complaint lodged by Ravenshaw University authorities over hacking of one of its websites in which certain porno pictures and obscene write-ups appeared for two consecutive days on Wednesday and Thursday.

The distasteful material was, however, taken off on Friday even as the university authorities locked the website that was inaugurated five years ago, said a crime branch DSP D.P. Mazumdar, who is now the in-charge officer of the only cyber police station of the State functioning from the police headquarters.

The website www.ravenshaw.edu.com was developed by three MCA students of the erstwhile autonomous college in 2002 and it was regularly updated till last year when the college was upgraded into a Unitary University.

Anonymous letter

As the university developed its own website last year, the old website was not further upgraded, said varsity register Satyakam Mishra.

“On Wednesday, university Vice-Chancellor Debdas Chhotray received an anonymous letter in which the writer claiming to be a well-wisher of the institute informed about the objectionable pictures and distasteful material appearing on the website.

Some more porno pictures were also released on the site on Thursday,” Mr. Mishra said.

“We suspect some mischievous elements might have an access to the password of the old website and are now out to malign the famous educational institution of the State,” he said adding that the matter was immediately brought to the notice of the cyber police station.
