Crying for attention: It is hoped that outsourcing of sanitation work will bring in hygiene in Berhampur. —
BERHAMPUR: Outsourcing is being thought of as the remedy to the dismal sanitary condition in the city. At a meeting held to discuss the problems of sanitation, Revenue Divisional Commissioner (RDC), southern range, C.T.M. Suguna directed local municipal authorities to prepare a blueprint for outsourcing of sanitation work. Four major markets and ward number 23 had already been outsourced by the municipality. Extension of outsourcing faced opposition of the Sanitary Workers’ Association and some councillors in the past. But, existing workers were not enough to keep the city clean. Dearth of sweepers and equipment was said to be a major reason behind lack of sanitation in the city. The workers’ association sought appointment of sweepers on daily payment. As this would not be possible due to government restrictions, the Ms. Suguna instructed officials to expedite the works through outsourcing. The authorities were also asked to prepare a detailed report on the financial needs to acquire vehicles and equipment. It was decided to have garbage bins in every area of and to initiate awareness programmes for proper and healthy disposal of garbage.
