KOCHI: A group of intellectuals came together on a `campaign against the politician-mafia nexus’ platform organised by the Solidarity Youth Movement here on Friday. Asserting that strong people’s resistance was essential to check the criminalisation of Kerala polity, the speakers hit out at what they termed the widening network of politicians and criminals. The speakers at the convention included former High Court Judge K. Sukumaran; media commentator B.R.P. Bhaskar; editor O. Abdurahman; novelist C. Radhakrishnan; and, author and educationist N.A. Kareem. Letters of support from V.R. Krishna Iyer and M.N. Vijayan were read out. Mr. Sukumaran said it was painful to watch once-idealistic leaders sinking to new depths to make money. He wanted the people to come out in the open to fight the role of what he termed mafia groups in politics. He called for a judicial probe into the mafia’s role in a recent `bond-and-bribe’ scam. Solidarity president P. Mujeeb Rahman gave an overview of the state of political corruption in Kerala and called for an organisational network to combat the politician-mafia nexus.
