Compensation for accident victim

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) has awarded Rs.19 lakh compensation to the family of a 29-year-old web designer who was killed in an accident two years ago.

In a recent order, Presiding Officer of the MACT A. S. Yadav held that the insurance company had delayed in giving compensation to the parents of Anupam Chaudhary, a web designer with a software firm who was killed in the accident on May 20, 2004, when a truck hit his motorcycle.

National Insurance Company, with which the vehicle was insured, had pleaded that the compensation was on the higher side. However, the Presiding Officer ruled that the deceased had a bright future.

He also refused the plea of the insurance company that the amount should be charged from the truck driver. The Presiding Officer ruled that it had not been proved that the truck driver did not have a licence.

The order also asked the insurance company to pay the compensation within a month.
