Staff Reporter

‘A total of Rs.392 crore had been collected till June 30’

NEW DELHI: Municipal Corporation of Delhi Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta has expressed satisfaction over the encouraging response to the newly introduced online system of depositing property tax as well as the tax collections so far.

Addressing a press conference at Town Hall, Mr. Gupta claimed that around one lakh people had paid the property tax online this year. Of these, 36,000 had made the payment through credit cards and around 50,000 through cheques. The total payment received through credit cards was Rs.9.20 crore, whereas about Rs.50 crore was received through cheques.

Expressing gratitude to the people for coming out in large numbers to deposit the property tax before the June 30 deadline to avail themselves of the rebate, the Bharatiya Janata Party leader claimed that a total of Rs.392 crore had been collected till June 30, which was Rs.55 crore more compared with the collections for the corresponding period last year.

In all, 5,06,874 people had filed their returns and deposited the property tax this year before the rebate deadline.

Mr. Gupta disclosed that a large number of Government agencies had also deposited the tax before June 30 this year compared to last year.

About Rs.20 crore has been received from various Government agencies including Delhi University, Delhi Jal Board, BSES Rajdhani, BSES Yamuna and Jawaharlal Nehru University, he added.

He said efforts were also being made to increase the number of counters to receive property tax and cybercafés would also be authorised to receive the tax next year.
