“Exhibition-cum-Presentation on Russian Higher Education” opens in Delhi today

NEW DELHI: A two-day “Exhibition-cum-Presentation on Russian Higher Education”, being organised by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture (RCSC) in association with the Russian Asian Centre for University Services (RACUS), St.Petersburg, opens at Ferozeshah Road here on Saturday.

A three-member Russian delegation comprising RACUS deputy director Ali Nutsalov, International Students Department St. Petersburg State Paediatric Medical Academy manager Natalia Makarchuk, and International Students Department Saratov State Medical University manager Ekaterina Polunina will be present to provide students seeking admission to Russian universities all the required information, guidance and assistance including spot-admissions.

Owing to favourable conditions created for foreign students to attain higher education, about 110,000 foreign students from mre than 200 counties came to study at Russian universities last year, according to the RCSC.

So why should an Indian student opt for destination Russia?

According to RCSC, the Government of the Russian Federation provides financial support to back up the training of foreign students at State universities. A foreign student has to pay only 10-12 per cent of the net cost of education, which amounts to about 12,000 dollars. In all, the annual average expenses for the tuition, accommodation, insurance and food in Russia make up about 3,500 to 4,500 dollars. This, according to RCSC, is much lower compared with studying in other European countries.

One can choose from over 500 highly demanding specialities in different areas such as medicine, engineering, economics and humanities. Training in most popular specialities is carried out not only in Russian but also in English and French. Higher education in Russia can be obtained along two lines -- either five years of education leading to a specialist’s degree or four years of studies for a bachelor’s degree followed by two years to get a master’s degree. With a specialist’s degree as well as with a master’s degree one can continue education as a post-graduate student. Post-graduate courses are available in almost all possible specialities.

Russian university degrees are recognised in all countries according to inter-governmental treaties or agreements between them. Upon successful graduation from a Russian university, one receives a degree with the European appendix that enables one to continue education or take up a job in another European country.
