Borderless: Waves spill on to the beach at Poonthura in the city on Friday.

Thiruvananthapuram: Four houses were destroyed and three partially damaged as strong waves unleashed by monsoon turbulence continued their ceaseless assault on the coastal areas of the city on Friday. Long stretches of the beach were consumed by the marauding waves, displacing several families. Coconut trees were washed away and even concrete houses were not spared by the raging sea.

District Collector N. Ayyappan visited the worst- affected areas. The heavily-damaged Sanghumukham beach road was on the verge of being eaten up by the sea. Efforts were on to shore up the vulnerable stretches of the road, he said.

The worst erosion was reported from the Kannanthura, Veli and Sanghumukham areas in the city. At Poonthura, the sea spilled over the beach and rushed inland forcing residents to flee.

Poundukadavu ward councillor Veli Varghese said the severe erosion had displaced 75 families in the Valiaveli area over the last two weeks. As many as 34 houses were destroyed and 300 trees were uprooted.
