Educating the public on crime prevention Law & order

City Police have begun a drive to prevent crime, writes V. S. Palaniappan

The Coimbatore City Police have taken up the job of educating the public on the modus operandi of criminals, to prevent incidents of crime.

Proactive policing would yield better results than performing a reactive role, hence the decision to educate the people on the preventive strategies, City Police Commissioner, C.K. Gandhirajan pointed out.

The City Police have brought out a four-page foldable handout containing tips on modus operandi of criminals and strategies to prevent incidents and also the phone numbers of police stations and officers.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Law and Order – Central, K. Kumarasami said that the handout largely focused on preventing incidents of burglary by day/night, robbery, waylaying and chain snatching.

People, while leaving the house with locked doors, could inform the jurisdiction police station for an entry in the register for locked doors. Similarly, public should have a tie-up with the neighbours for preventing the accumulation of newspapers and milk sachets since it would draw the attention of criminals.

People should make use of safe vaults in banks and avoid keeping excess valuables, jewels and cash at home.

When women stayed alone at home, both at night and during the day, they should exercise caution in opening the doors for strangers.

It would be preferable to have lenses fixed on the doors and iron grills to have a look at the person at the gate before opening the doors.

In the case of individual houses, the residents should prefer having dogs with a board “Beware of Dogs” at the gate to deter criminals.

Similarly, residents should switch on lights around the house to deter criminals from operating freely.

While appointing drivers, servant maids and security, they should do so only after verifying antecedents and backgrounds of the prospective employees and also collect their address proof and photographs, since in many cases these employers were either criminals or informants for criminals.

People should avoid discussing their tour plans or absence of male members in the house in a loud voice, especially in public places. Police caution people about a gang that uses “diversion of attention” to rob people .
