Pockets in capital battle malaria

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Malaria prevention and control activities have been strengthened in the Pozhiyoor-Poovar area in the district following continuous reporting of cases from the locality.

All those who were diagnosed with the disease had been to Mangalapuram, Tuthoor areas for fishing and related businesses.

All cases of malaria have been found to be caused by the less virulent strain of the virus, plasmodium vivax. Blood testing facilities and treatment has been made available for free in hospitals in Pozhiyoor-Poovar.

Chloroquine tablets are being given as a preventive to those travelling to other States. Insecticide deltamethrin is being sprayed in houses to keep mosquitoes away.

Of the 2,951 fever cases reported in the district on Friday, 16 are suspected to be chikungunya. Three cases of dengue fever and two cases each of malaria and leptospirosis were also reported.
