Delay in train services fuels commuters’ ire

Staff Reporter

TIRUVALLUR: Train services on the Chennai Central-Arakonam section were disrupted for nearly five hours on Friday morning after irate EMU commuters squatted on the track at the Arakonam junction and at the Tiruvallur railway station, protesting what they called an inordinate delay in arrival of suburban trains and also demanding restoration of the old schedule.

Enquiries reveal that thousands of commuters, waiting for the Tirutani-Chennai Central Fast EMU at Arakonam, became restless since the train, supposed to reach Arakonam at 7. 10 a.m. as per the revised schedule (in effect from July 1), did not come even after 30 minutes. They squatted on the track blocking the Arakonam-Central ordinary train scheduled to leave the station at 8. 30 a.m. Subsequently, the Chennai-Bangalore Express and the Katpadi-Arakonam train were also detained at the junction.

Meanwhile, a large number of commuters at the Tiruvallur railway station were also upset by the non-arrival of Tirutani-Chennai Central Fast EMU scheduled to arrive at 7. 40 a.m. as per the revised schedule. Annoyed by the delay and the withdrawal of two Fast EMUs scheduled to leave Tiruvallur at 8. 20 a.m. and at 9. 15 a.m., commuters squatted on the track at around 7. 45 a.m.

Arakonam commuters withdrew their agitation at around 10. 15 a.m. and Tiruvallur commuters at around 11. 45 a.m. after getting assurances from the authorities that their demand for operation of EMU services as per the old schedule would be considered.

Official’s explanation

An official of the Chennai Division said the revision of the suburban railway timings was done to facilitate the commuters beyond Arakkonam. Though the railway had extended the services of some EMU services, the timing was so adjusted that it did not affect the schedule at intermediary stations. The grievance of the commuters, according to him, was that they did not get sufficient seats in the EMUs in the new format.

As the administration introduced new services for Avadi commuters, commuters in Arakkonam and Tiruvallur wanted more services from their stations. It was unfortunate that even if there was a small setback, commuters indulged in agitations.
