A welcome change: A host of operations at a dozen post offices in the southern suburbs of Chennai are being computerised. A scene at the Selaiyur post office.

TAMBARAM: Computerised operations of savings accounts, term deposits and other financial transactions in post offices, till now available only in a few, have been extended to a dozen centres in the southern suburbs of Chennai.

Some post offices would have ‘single window counter’ facilities, where customers can withdraw cash, pay bills of telephone and internet connections of the BSNL and private telecom service providers besides sending mails, but faster than before. Prior to the computerisation, account-holders have to spend considerable time at the counters for the staff to effect the transactions manually. Entries were made in passbooks after verifying the original records.

This may soon be a thing of the past with computerisation of the savings accounts and other records, officials of the Department of Posts said. The objective was to reduce the waiting time for the customers and towards administrative convenience, said A. Govindarajan, Senior Superintendent of Posts, Tambaram Division.

Computerised operations were available only at three Head Post Offices in Tambaram Division: Avadi, Ambattur and Tambaram. It was also implemented in Chromepet on a trial basis. A few months ago, it was decided to extend these services to 22 post offices in Tambaram Division, whose jurisdiction spreads as far as Ambattur. Of these 22 post offices, 12 of them are in and around Tambaram in the southern suburbs of Chennai.

Computers installed with ‘Sanjay Post’, the in-house software developed by the Department of Posts in Mysore, have been despatched to these post offices. At present, the entire data stored in records is being fed into the computers and it would take a while for these 12 post offices to commence the entire range of operations.

The monthly interest on deposits and savings would be calculated automatically and updated in the server, Mr. Govindarajan said. Soon, printers to record computer-generated entries in the passbooks would also be provided.
