IN MEMORY: The Government Fine Arts College, Kumbakonam, is sculpting a statue in memory of 96 school children, who died in the fire tragedy at a school in Kumbakonam on July 16, 2004. It will be completed in four months. —
KUMBAKONAM: A memorial for 94 students killed in July 16, 2004 Kumbakonam school fire tragedy will be completed in three to four months, according to Kumbakonam Municipal Commissioner V.P. Dhandapani.
The Government had allotted Rs. 60 lakh and the memorial would be located at Palakarai. The municipality had taken up the civil works. Professors of the Kumbakonam Government Arts and Crafts College were sculpting the plaque, a bronze pillar with flame. The Chennai Fine Arts College and the Kumbakonam college jointly prepared the design.
Mr. Dhandapani said the memorial was coming up on a 14,000 sq ft area.
The octagonal structure would come up on 10,000 sq ft. A meditation hall and a children’s park would also be part of it.
Eleven children of Natham village near Kumbakonam died in the fire. Various development works had been taken up in the village.
