CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday wanted the Centre and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to intervene to get water released from Karnataka.
Reacting to reports that water release from the Krishna Raj Sagar was ordered stopped by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister B.S.Yediyurappa, he hoped that the news was not true. If it was true, then it would mean that he was digging the grave for the principle of coalition politics. Even now Tamil Nadu has been unable to open the sluice gates at Mettur, he said in a statement.
Mr. Karunanidhi wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the reported act of ordering stopping of the water release.
“The monsoon is very active in Karnataka and the dams are getting filled up. The Kabini is surplussing and inflow into Krishna Raj Sagar is also adequate to release sufficient quantity of water to the Mettur dam,” he said, adding he had seen the news report, which said Mr. Yediyurappa had “ordered to stop release of water from Krishna Raj Sagar to Tamil Nadu.”
“They have also spread news saying that the agriculturists in Karnataka are agitating against the release of water to Tamil Nadu,” he said and wanted to know if “this approach of Karnataka and its Deputy Chief Minister is in tune with the federal structure of our Constitution.”
Mr. Karunanidhi said he had written to the Prime Minister to request him to take “appropriate action.”
