CPI (M) demands a congenial atmosphere for cooperative polls

CHENNAI: Secretary of the State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan on Friday urged the Government to take steps for creating a congenial atmosphere for candidates filing nominations for the cooperative elections and members carrying out the democratic duty of exercising their franchise in a peaceful manner. In a statement here, he said though the cooperative elections were announced after a gap of several years and filing of nominations had begun, certain reports related to the poll process were “a cause of concern and deserve condemnation.”
There were complaints that candidates were not allowed to file nominations in various places and only those who were favoured by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam were able to submit the papers, he said. The Government had been apprised of such “undemocratic actions.” The public and candidates had resorted to protests in different places, he said.
Mr. Varadarajan urged the Government to call for fresh elections, to be conducted in a democratic manner as per a fresh schedule, in cooperative societies where candidates were not allowed to file their papers.
