Taking stock: Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap addressing a meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee at the Collectorate in Vellore on Friday. Union Minister of State for Railways and chairman of the committee R. Velu attended the meeting.

VELLORE: Priority will be given to girls’ schools under the scheme of providing drinking water to rural schools and constructing new toilets, according to R. Velu, Union Minister of State for Railways and the chairman of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee for Rural Development.

Talking to newspersons after presiding over a meeting of the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee, Mr. Velu said out of the 620 villages identified as lacking in adequate water supply and which needed new schemes under the Drought-Prone Areas Programme (DPAP), new water sources had been created and water supply augmented in 20 villages.

The Minister said he would recommend to the Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, to consider tiled and asbestos-roofed houses as ‘kutcha’ houses for the purpose of granting the subsidy of Rs. 12,000 for upgradation as ‘pucca’ houses.

Following representations made to him by the people that the existing subsidy for the construction of group houses under the Indira Awas Yojana was not sufficient in view of the increase in prices of raw materials such as sand and cement, Mr. Velu had written to the MRD to enhance the subsidy to Rs. 50,000.

Mr. Velu, along with Collector Dharmendra Prathap, reviewed the progress of the following works: 4,476 works under the Sampoorna Gramin Rozgar Yojana (SGRY) in 753 village panchayats, grant of revolving fund of Rs.121 lakh to 1,214 self-help groups (SHGs) under the Swarna Jayanthi Rozgar Yojana (SJRY), grant of loans of Rs.225.51 lakh under the economic assistance scheme to 315 SHGs, upgradation of 1,104 ‘kutcha’ houses (Rs.137.98 lakhs), and nine roads under the Prime Minister’s Rural Roads Scheme (Rs.324.60 lakh).
