Health department turns to e-mail for communication

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Two months from now, around 40,000 officials and employees of the Public Health Department will get all their communication through e-mail. Besides instant communication among the employees across the State, this new facility will also cut down huge stationery and postage charges for the department.
The Special Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, P.W.C. Davidar, who was here in connection with a public function, told The Hindu, that “it some times takes more than a month for a communication (from Chennai) to reach the l
ower level staff. In many cases, it never reaches them at all.”
Every official/employee would get an e-mail account. Besides, the mobile number of officials would be stored in a database, which would be used to give “alerts” about the communication sent. “The alerts would carry crux of the message and for details, they can check their e-mail,” Mr. Davidar said.
Around 30 per cent of database loading had been completed. The software categorised officials/employees based on various factors including designation and location. “This categorisation will enable us to send communication to specific groups,” he added.
At present, the employees would have to make use of Internet cafes to access e-mail. However, they would be able to do it at Government hospitals and, at later stages, in PHCs too, he said.
Computerisation
A pilot project of computerisation of day-to-day activities at Government hospitals in five select districts was under way. All the registers, from patients register to discharge summary, would be recorded in computers that would work on a web-enabled software.
