Chennai: B. Adhiban defeated his compatriot P. Shyam Nikhil in the seventh round to take his tally to 6.5 points at the end of the seventh round in the under-16 category of the Asian under-16 and 18 chess championships at Tashkent on Thursday. Adhiban maintained one point lead over this nearest player, Darini Pouria (5.5, Iri) who scored over R. Ashwath (4.5), S.P. Sethuraman, S. Nitin (both India) and Mustafaev Jamshid (5 points, Uzb) are in third spot with five points. In the under-16 girls’ section, Pon. N. Krithika (5.5 points) beat P. Uthra (4.5 points) to stay just half a point behind the leader Nakhbayeva Guliskhan (6 points, Kaz). Bhakthi Kulkarni (Ind) and Esonboeva, Gulrushor (Uzb) are in third place with five points each. In the under-18 girls section, WIM Kiran Monisha Mohanty defeated Muminova Nafisa (4, Uzb) and joined Rysbayeva Aigerim (4, Kaz) in the lead with five points. R. Preethi scored a creditable victory over last year’s under-16 winner P. Lakshmi Sahiti to stay in the second spot with 4.5 points along with Daveletbayeva, Madina (3.5, Kaz). WGM Dronavalli Harika who chose to play in the uinder-18 boys’ section and M.R. Lalith Babu are in fourth place with 4.5 points, while Andrey Kvon (UZB) leads with six points.
