UP cop retracts statement
NEW DELHI: Deposing in the Nitish Katara murder case before a Delhi court on Friday, a constable of the Uttar Pradesh police retracted from his earlier statement that he had seen the main accused Vikas Yadav, his cousin and co-accused Vishal Yadav and another accused Sukhdev Pehalwan with Nitish in a Tata Safari on the fateful night of February 16, 2002.
Constable Inderjeet told the court that it was wrong to suggest that he had seen the three accused with the victim in a Tata Safari. The constable was deposing in a case against Pehalwan, who had earlier been declared Proclaimed Offender by the court and subsequently arrested at Hardoi in U. P.
Following the statement, public prosecutor B. S. Joon requested the court to declare him hostile. He also sought the permission to cross examine him which the court allowed.
