Concern over deteriorating health of six students who are on hunger strike

NEW DELHI: Amid concerns over the deteriorating health of six students of Jawaharlal Nehru University who have been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past one week, Dean of Students’ Welfare R. K. Kale and Associate Dean of Students’ Welfare V. K. Jain met them once again on Friday and asked them to call off their strike.

“We keep monitoring the health of the students and go by the advice of our Chief Medical Officer. Whenever the students reach a critical level, they are then sent to the hospital to be taken care of. We told them that we will start negotiations with them once they get back to the best of their health,” said Prof. Kale.

However, the students refused to concede to their suggestion. “They said we must end our strike and only then they will initiate a dialogue with us. But what is the guarantee that they will have a discussion with us once we call off our agitation. They must give us some concrete assurance,” said JNUSU general secretary Sandeep Singh.

The students’ union said Vice-Chancellor B. B. Bhattacharya also came to meet them for a short while.

Meanwhile, a protest meeting will be organised on the campus on Saturday evening against the “undemocratic” behaviour of the administration.
