Safety first: A male stork stands guard over the roosting females at a nest in Berhampur. —
BERHAMPUR: A group of cranes have found a place to perch on amidst the concrete jungle. Just 20 metres from the busy road connecting the All India Radio, some hundred birds have built their nests. And, most of these nests either have eggs to be hatched or are teeming with newborns. According to residents of the area, cranes are usually seen near marshy patches and paddy fields on the outskirts of the city. But, this is for the first time the birds have started breeding in city limits. Shopkeepers of the area are too protective of these birds. They are shooing away children who try to throw stones at the nests. Monsoon seems to be the breeding season. Parent birds are seen getting food for their little ones. DFO S.N. Mohapatra says common cranes found in India have can adapt themselves to any situation and surroundings. But they always live and nest in areas where their feeding zone falls within their flying zone.
