MUMBAI: Despite the State’s inadequate infrastructure, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh’s recent tour of the U.S. has led to a lot of interest in investing here and the big catch is an information technology (IT) park at Hinjewadi near Pune to be developed by Microsoft. Mr. Deshmukh promised to remove the red tape and roll out the red carpet for potential investors. Mr. Deshmukh, who returned on Wednesday, told reporters here on Thursday that he was extremely satisfied with the response given to the delegation from various places in the U.S. which had resulted in the signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with Microsoft, Ireel Manella for a Bollywood Theme Park and Vornado Realty Trust, which is well-known the world over in the field of infra structure development. Vornado has tied up with the government to invest $200 million in a township.Apart from signing an MoU with Microsoft for the IT Park, Mr. Deshmukh said the Bill Gates Foundation which was already funding many Aids programmes was interested in doing something on child deaths. The Foundation was open to funding a programme which the government would design.Mr. Deshmukh said many of the meetings held in 2005 had resulted in firming up investments this time. For the first time, a Maharashtra Investment Forum was held in New York.
