MADURAI: The Estimates Committee of the State Assembly on Friday visited various aided colleges and Adi Dravidar hostels in the district.

Addressing a press meet here on Friday, its chairman, S.S. Ghouse Basha, said that the committee focused on higher education, Adi Dravidar, Scheduled Castes and Schedule Tribes’ welfare during its inspection.

“There is a shortage of teachers in some colleges while others have expressed a need for auditorium and more buildings. Some colleges do not possess adequate infrastructure. Corrective measures will be recommended to the Government,” he said.

During its inspection of the MSS Waqf Board College, the college officials told the committee members that a water body flowed through the college, which was a hindrance to them.

The college officials had urged the committee to take steps to close it.

Mr. Ghouse Basha, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Madurai Central, said that a request for an auditorium was also echoed at Government Meenakshi College for Women.

The college had also asked for demolishing an old building on its premises and replacing it with a new one

The committee, upon inspecting Adi Dravidar schools, found that they lacked basic amenities. “We have asked the hostel authorities to change the menu. Also, the committee has urged the district administration to make suitable arrangements,” he said.

The Collector had assured the committee that money would be disbursed from his funds, he said. Complaints about delay in disbursal of old age pension was also brought to the notice of the committee which had directed the officials concerned to attend to the issue immediately.

The Collector, G. Sundaramurthy, and the MLA of Madurai East constituency, N. Nanmaran, were also present.
