Sloth bear falls in trap, dies

ZAFFARGADH (WARANGAL DT): A trap laid by the villagers to catch wild boars cost the life of a wild animal in Zaffargadh mandal here on Friday. A male sloth bear died as its neck was slit by the clutch wire that was used for making the net.

Two sloth bears were trapped in the net laid for the wild boars by the villagers in Zaffargadh mandal. Very often, pigs stray into agricultural fields down, and damage the entire crop. With a view to contain the menace, the villagers often resort to various preventive measures.

On Thursday, some villagers laid a trap between two trees. Accidentally, two sloth bears, one male and one female were trapped in the net on Thursday night. According to Forest Beat Officer, V Shyam Sunder, the villagers informed the local police and revenue officials on Friday morning after spotting the two bears. The officials in turn, informed the Forest Department. The bears were given tranquilisers and brought down the hillocks on swings with the help of villagers.
