‘Choose dry zones for infrastructure projects’

BANGALORE: Even as farmers across the country are protesting against acquisition of land for infrastructure projects, experts deliberating on land acquisition feel that projects that are not location-specific should be planned in dry zones to prevent opposition from farmers.

A proper resettlement and rehabilitation package along with consent from farmers will make the acquisition process fast, they said.

They were discussing the issue at “Suminfra 2007,” a summit on “Sustainable Public-Private Partnerships in Infrastructure” organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Friday.

Opposition to projects could be prevented if they are located in dry zones.

For specific infrastructure projects such as roads, people’s participation should be encouraged and their consent sought before execution of the project, experts said.

Compensation package

According to the former Additional Chief Secretary N. Viswanathan, valuation of land and compensation package awarded to farmers were the principal source of dispute with regard to land acquisition.

Advanced technologies could be used to reduce the quantum of land required for projects,” Mr. Viswanathan said.
