When they played with words

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Karthik Shyam has an American accent, more so noticed when he spells “Z” as “Zee.” But this did not come in way of giving his best performance in the MaRRS International Spelling Bee National Level Championship held in Goa on June 30 and July 1.

Mr. Shyam, who was adjudged best performer in the competition, said, “the judges accepted the way I pronounced the words.” It took him some time to spell out the word “lugubrious,” said this 12th standard student of National Public School, Rajajinagar. He stood first in category 6 (for 11th and 12 standard students) of the competition

Mr. Shyam and four other winners from the city shared their experiences during their chat with presspersons here on Saturday.

Siddarth Iyengar, classmate of Mr. Shyam, found it difficult to explain the stage where his friend went past him.

“I think he spelt more number of words correctly than me,” said Mr. Iyengar, who stood third in category 6. Namitha Narasimha, who stood first in category 4 ( for students of 7th and 8th standard), said reading of thrillers and fictions came in handy.

Yash Chaturvedi and Srishti Chandana stood third in category 1 (for 1st and 2nd standard students) and category 2 ( for 3rd and 4th standard students) respectively.
