HASSAN: Five houses collapsed due to heavy rain in Mirza Mohalla and Ambedkar Nagar here on Saturday.

Seepage water had entered the houses, most of which are made of mud.

Potato crop in Hassan, Alur and Arakalagudu taluks has been damaged. The loss is yet to be estimated. Maize, pepper and ginger crops and coffee and orange plantations too have been damaged. Paddy fields have been marooned. According to the Meteorological Department, the rain is likely to continue for the next 48 hours.

In Ambedkar Nagar, the Pirambi family had a narrow escape. Two children were sleeping inside when their house collapsed. But a wooden panel prevented the side wall from falling on them. Residents alleged that the councillor had not visited the affected areas. They urged the Deputy Commissioner to rehabilitate them.
