Appeal to Government

CHENNAI: Central Organisation of Tamilnadu Electricity Employees (COTEE) has urged the Government to reconsider its decision of regularising the services of contract labourers in a phased manner, instead of appointing them in one stroke.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) had decided to regularise the services of 21,400 contract labourers in phases at the rate of 6,000 employees per year, it said.

In a statement here on Sunday, COTEE president S. Pancharatnam and general secretary S.S. Subramanian said the TNEB’s announcement ran counter to the ruling party’s election promise of abolishing the contract labour system.

There were 25,000 vacancies in TNEB, they said, adding that only by filling these posts the requirement of 1.85 lakh consumers could be met. — Special Correspondent
