dated July 9, 1957: American wheat for India

The Union Food Minister, Mr. A.P. Jain, told reporters in Lucknow on July 7 that another wheat loan agreement between India and the US had reached an advanced stage of negotiations. Mr. Jain was unable to specify the exact quantity of wheat to be imported under the agreement, but said the deal might be a little smaller than the previous loan. He said the price of wheat had generally shown a downward trend following the formation of wheat zones. Rice position had also considerably eased. Asked about Government’s policy in regard to inter-State movement of foodgrains, Mr. Jain said, “I am a believer in free economy and I shall impose restrictions to the minimum possible extent. Unless there is a surplus in a State, the movement of foodgrains to other States from that State will not be permitted.”
