Preparations under way for delimitation exercise

M. Balaganessin

PUDUKOTTAI: A special process for delimitation of the jurisdiction of local bodies will be taken up in the district in consultation with the elected representatives.

The objective of the exercise, among other things, is to ensure efficient administration of local bodies and implement several people-oriented schemes by elevating their status. The district administration has planned to submit draft recommendations on re-drawing the jurisdiction of the local bodies. The recommendations will be arrived at based on suggestions from elected representatives.

The re-drawing will either end up with the elevation of a local body into its next higher grade or downgrading its present status. Similarly, merger of the village panchayats, either partly or fully with the nearest town panchayat or municipality, and the bifurcation of the existing panchayat unions for ensuring efficient administration of local bodies, would also be recommended to the Government.

The draft recommendations will be prepared at the end of three meetings with local representatives. A preliminary meeting, the first in the series, was held recently, when Collector S. J. Chiru explained the objectives of the delimitation process to the heads of local body. He has called for memoranda or petitions from the local body representatives opting for elevation, downgrading and merger of their area. Before sending the draft recommendation to the Government, it will be displayed at the offices of the concerned local bodies and also at public offices in that jurisdiction .

The exercise seems to have evoked a positive response from the elected representatives of local bodies. A majority of them are busy drawing sketches and preparing documents with authentic survey and field measurement data.
