KANCHEEPURAM: Family first, society next — was the clear message sent out by the participants of a district-level convention of women panchayat presidents held at Chengalpattu on Saturday.
The convention was organised by the Tamil Nadu Federation of Women Presidents of Panchayat Government (TNFWPPG).
K. Vijayalakshmi Krishnan, Tiruporur Panchayat Union chairman, said it was their husbands who made them (the women) presidents or chairpersons of the civic bodies.
But for the support and encouragement from the family head, several women would not even able to contest the elections, she added.
Pointing out that majority of women panchayat presidents or local body representatives were housewives, she called upon fellow elected representatives to execute their duties in such a manner that their respective life partners were respected in society.
Gomathi, Karanai village panchayat president and N. Vanitha, president, Puzhithivakkam village panchayat, alleged that due respect was not being given to women panchayat presidents at government offices.
Ms. Gomathi said she had to wait for more than 2 hours at a government office at Chengalpattu recently, when she went there along with a group of women to submit applications for allotment of pattas.
Calling upon her counterparts to face problems boldly, S. Anjalai, Kumaravadi panchayat president, urged them to use the powers granted under Constitution for the betterment of the society.
T. Duraisamy, Chairman, District Panchayat Council, Balakrishnan, State General Secretary, Vivasayigal Sangam, B. Thiyagarajan former Joint Director, Rural Development Department, Aasi Fernandas, Director, Human Rights Organisation, L. Amudha, State Executive Committee Member, TNFWPPG participated in the convention.
