For a better tomorrow: Air Commodore G.R. Prasad, Air Officer Commanding of Avadi AFS and Air Force Wives Welfare Association president Pushpa Vijay Prasad water a sapling at the launch of Green Avadi project on Sunday.
CHENNAI: The Avadi Air Force Station (AFS) on Sunday launched Green Avadi project as part of which about 300 saplings were planted at its premises in Muthapudupet. Sunday morning saw AFS officials and their families planting and watering mango and coconut saplings across a few acres of land inside the campus. The initiative, to protect the environment, is a joint venture of the Air Force Wives Welfare Association and the Avadi AFS. It is one of the programmes being organised as a run-up to the 4th Military World Games scheduled to be conducted in Secunderabad in September. Launching the project, Air Commodore G.R. Prasad, Air Officer Commanding of the Avadi AFS, said about 3,000 saplings of different varieties would be planted across the 514 acre premises in the coming months. Though the nation had progressed in several fields, environment protection still remained neglected, he pointed out. Emphasis on ecology
Air Commodore Prasad said the Indian Air Force (IAF) laid emphasis on ecological development. Such initiatives would pave way for sustainable development. He also encouraged the AFS personnel to grow kitchen plants in their houses that would not only come in handy for them and but also for future occupants. “We must leave a better environment for the next generation than we inherited,” added Air Commodore Prasad. Air Force Wives Welfare Association president Pushpa Vijay Prasad and about 40 members of the association participated. The association periodically organises camps to educate its members on environmental issues such as global warming and rainwater harvesting. The Green Avadi project is a part of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the IAF.
