Retain fast passenger

The Railways recently introduced a fast passenger train service three days in a week between Machilipatnam and Tirupati. This is the only night fast passenger, which is well patronised by the poor and middle class people, from this area. Though there are two express trains during night from this area, the railways is all set to convert it into express train. This is nothing short of neglecting the convenience of poor and middle class people. B.V.R. Sastry

Streamline ‘197’ service

The BSNL is making all out efforts to compete with private players but some small things are spoiling all their efforts. One among them is the 197 directory enquiry. There must be some mechanism to monitor the style of responses and the tone of answering. It is always never to the satisfaction of the subscribers. There is nothing wrong in learning from private players. A small amount of courtesy and proper mannerisms will definitely help the BSNL to a great extent. Further, I do want to suggest that accountability must be maintained at all levels to maintain good subscriber base. Some top brass of the BSNL should try 197 and personally visit the telecom centres to learn how difficult it is to get proper service from them.

A real tribute

The birth anniversary of former MLA Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga Rao provided a perfect platform for the face-off between supporters of Vijayawada (East) MLA Vangaveeti Radhakrishna and his cousin Vangaveeti Shantan Kumar on July 4. The police had to intervene when a scuffle ensued between both the groups, which tried to garland former MLA’s statue at the same time. The warring groups should remember that the people are really not bothered to know who paid tribute to a popular leader. G. Satyam

Row over plaque

Removal of a plaque unveiled by former chief minister N.T. Rama Rao at Durga Malleswara Swamy temple atop Indrakeeladri triggered controversy a couple of days ago. The Telugu Desam Party activists squatted in front of the temple and raised slogans against the government and the temple trust board. They brought the plaque from the Executive Officer’s chamber, cleansed it with milk and offered puja to it. There are no second opinions on the fact that N.T. Rama Rao brought fame to entire Telugu people. But, it is height of obeisance to perform puja to a plaque unveiled by him.

Misusing status

Wife of a cop was booked for allegedly cheating gullible people promising them to practice black magic to cure illness. Seethamahalakshmi, wife of an ASI, allegedly collected Rs. 3.5 lakhs and 25 sovereigns of gold from Alla Varalakshmi, who lodged complaint.

The episode brings some facts to light. First, there are no efforts from the Government to educate people that black magic does not cure illnesses. Secondly, the official status is being misused for personal gains. Ahmed Ali
