CHENNAI: Students of C. L. Methaa Matriculation Higher Secondary School in West Mambalam may not know the legal aspects of the civil dispute over the land their school was built on. However, they learnt on Sunday that their classrooms, laboratories and favourite benches were no longer going to be there.

The school was closed on Wednesday following a Madras High Court Order on a civil dispute over ownership of the land. With police personnel posted there for security, demolition work began on Sunday morning. Furniture and other equipment were removed. Classrooms’ ceilings, walls and black boards inside were broken down.

Even while saying at a meeting on Friday that demolition was unlikely, the school management (Rajasthani Jain Samaj Educational Trust) had told parents that in such an eventuality, it would conduct classes at B. S. Mootha Senior Secondary School near the Doraiswamy subway, which is also run by it.

Secretary of the Trust Udai Mehta said: “We have additional classrooms there. Classes will begin on July 11, as per the Matriculation syllabus that the school has been following. We will make sure no child loses out.”

However, parents remained unsure about how the school authorities would accommodate nearly 500 students on the B. S. Mootha school premises. “This came as a great shock to us. It will be impossible to seek admissions in other schools after a month into the new academic year. We are hoping the management does not let us down,” said a parent.
