Primary needs: Sewage stagnated on roads of Chellam Nagar in Tirupur Municipality make life miserable for the residents. –
TIRUPUR: The residents of Chellam Nagar falling under Ward 30 of Tirupur Municipality thronged the Municipal Office on Wednesday demanding basic Amenities, particularly roads.
They saidthat they could not use the five roads inthe area since they are filled with sewage and sludge. The entire area
does not have storm water drains or black-topped roads. It was even impossible to walk along the roads, they said.
They asked the authorities to construct buildings for the primary school immediately. They said that an elementary school was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa at Chellam Nagar inFebruary 2002.
As there were no adequate classrooms the school was attached to Parappalayam School.
The people said that almost all the parents were daily wageworkers.
Many children were forced to drop out of the school as their parents did not findtime to bring them to school every day as it was far away from their residences.
Municipal Commissioner M. Ashokan promised themto consider the request. Since the area was unapproved, the local body has taken up the development work recently after paying regularisation fee by residents. He said that laying of roads and construction of storm water drains would be taken up soon.
