NABARD plays a vital role in development of Tuticorin

Tuticorin: The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development is turning 25 years this week. The contribution of the apex rural development bank to the overall development of Tuticorin district was “immense” during the period.
So far, the bank had financed infrastructure development projects in the district to the tune of Rs.130.77 crore under its Rural Infrastructure Development Fund. Segment-wise, the NABARD extended credit to the tune of Rs.47.67 crore for improvement of 185 village roads to the standards of ODR (Other District Road) and strengthening as well as widening of roads for a total distance of 546.5 km. Thirty bridges to a length of 1,401.1 metres were constructed with loan assistance of Rs.23.88 crore.
“The bridge projects were financed to provide better connectivity to villages for transporting agricultural produces, especially vegetables, to the nearest marketing centres,” R. Bharat Kumar, Assistant General Manager, NABARD, said. Similarly, 34 irrigation projects with a potential of supplying water to 7,404.72 hectares, and 10 power projects to minimise the distribution loss, were established with the assistance of Rs.31.17 crore and Rs.20.97 crore respectively. The rest of the Rs 130.77 crore of assistance was spent on establishing other facilities.
