NEYVELI: The Chief Justice of Madras High Court, Justice Ajith Prakash Shah, has called upon the Neyveli Lignite Corporation to start “library tourism” either at Neyveli or any other suitable place.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Neyveli Book Fair-2007 here on Saturday, Justice Mr. Shah said such a facility would enable children to read to their heart’s content and spend hours together on their favourite authors or books.
The Chief Justice said books taught values and encouraged imagination in the minds of the readers. It was unfortunate that in the era of Internet and satellite television, the reading habit was on the decline.
Technological advancements seemed to have eroded the reading habit. Reading would help to enhance knowledge, improve language skills — both spoken and written — and instill self-confidence.
In the absence of reading good books, there was a likelihood of students going astray and becoming dropouts and drug addicts. With good reading, the outlook and attitude of students would change so as to make them productive citizens. Unfortunately, children were finding it difficult to comprehend books and in the name of libraries, schools had only a small collection of books. Parents were to be blamed for such a state of affairs, as they were obsessed with the career of their wards, he said.
